Todd Terje

Looking Back on 2011: Justin Carter

The year has ended, and my existence as a DJ requires me to supply my Top Ten list. This is it in no particular order.

The Blues – I took a trip through the south this year. In Mississippi, I stopped in Clarksdale (where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil, an occasion now marked by a sad, easy-to-miss sculpture and a Church’s Chicken), and I joined the generation of middle-aged white men before me in getting into the blues.

Lucky for me, that generation has started to sell their records, and I came upon a store where someone had just dumped their entire collection, allowing me to grow my fairly paltry stock of blues records back at home into something more substantial. I’ve particularly fallen in love with Son House, whose “Grinnin’ In Your Face” I posted on the blog in October.

Gospel and Diva House – The first parties that I ever went to in New York were Body and Soul and Shelter. I also grew up in church mesmerized by a gospel singer named Eunice Mayfield. That means, of course, that I am into gospel and diva house, which I have been more than pleased to see in resurgence over the past year, starting with Omar S’s set with us back in January. It was pretty much all he played.

It’s A Good Life

Todd Terje playing at the Mister on Sunday. Let him take you to a place he knows you want to go…

Lift Off

A very special and very talented guest who doesn’t visit New York very often plus all the usual Mister Sunday ingredients makes for another special party. We’ll see you at the Grove.

No Time To Snooze

Todd Terje’s Snooze 4 Love, on the wonderful Running Back records, has become a bit of a Mister Sunday anthem already this summer. The shimmering synths and deep driving rhythm is the perfect soundtrack to that time when dusk settles at the Grove, the disco ball starts to twirl and the magic descends.

This Sunday the man himself joins Eamon & Justin for what is certain to be a special day. Don’t snooze on this one.

Introducing Mister Sunday

We’ve been keeping this one under our hats for a while, but the time has come to spill the beans. In just over a month, on Memorial Day Weekend, we’re introducing Mister Sunday, the outdoor, Sunday afternoon spinoff of Mister Saturday Night. Clever name, we know.

If you ever came to Sunday Best at BKLYN Yard, you’ll know the place: it’s the same canal-side, tree-spotted plot of land at 400 Carroll Street between Bond and Nevins in Brooklyn, now rechristened Gowanus Grove.

If you never made it down, let us count the ways you’re going to love it. First, kids and dogs – you can bring them. We love them, and we don’t get to see enough of them on Saturday nights. Second, superb food – we’re teaming up with Brooklyn Flea to install a small but ace team of food vendors. Right now, we’ve confirmed Mile End, who will be serving a bunch of stuff you can’t get at the storefront in Boerum Hill, and we’re soon to confirm at least one more. Third, our friends from Botanica, the best little bar in the five boroughs, are taking care of the booze.

And last, but certainly not least, is the music. The Mister Saturday Night residents, Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, the gents that pull the strings to bring it all together, will be playing records each and every Sunday through the summer on the big, blue soundsystem. There’ll be guests alongside them occasionally as well. Moodymann, Todd Terje, Horse Meat Disco, Optimo and Space Dimension Controller will all take their turns, and on opening day, Four Tet will drop by.

And that’s all there is to say about that. We’ll see you outside.
