The Zulu Walk

Justin and I first started working together back in 2008 when he was the Music Director at APT, and he invited me to have a weekly residency playing alongside none other than Afrika Bambaataa every Tuesday night. Bambaataa’s touring schedule and APT’s demise soon after meant the party didn’t last too long, but it was a thrill whilst it lasted. Needless to say the big man’s music has always been pretty special to me. I just picked this rather excellent jam up on 45. Get ready!

‘Harkin & Raney’ To Date

The guys from Dog & Pony recently requested a mix from Harkin & Raney to form part of a recent edition of their ongoing podcast series. This seemed like a good opportunity to pull together all the production work, encompassing original tracks and remixes for Wurst Music Co, On The Prowl and of course Throne of Blood, to date by Steve Raney and myself. Here in isolation is that collection of tracks in mix format to download. It contains some unreleased and soon-to-be-released material.

Harkin & Raney for Dog & Pony

1. Harkin & Raney – Workin’ & Steamin’ (Throne of Blood)
2. Neurotic Drum Band – Robotic Hypnotic Adventure (Harkin & Raney Remix) (Wurst Music Co.)
3. Harkin & Raney – Happenstance (Unreleased)
4. OneAuff (aka Steve Raney) – Heavy Heady (Throne of Blood)
5. Corinne – Dream A Little Dream (Harkin & Raney Remix) (On The Prowl)
6. Harkin & Raney – Word To The Wise (Throne of Blood)

Feast Your Eyes

Last week The Feast, a blog about stuff happening in the lovely city of New York, did a little interview with Eamon and me. They also caught some footage from the party two weeks ago, and it’s spliced in there. We thought you might like to see it.

Shakes On

Today sees the release of a second Throne of Blood EP from Eamon’s production project with studio partner Steve Raney.

Harkin & Raney‘s ‘Shakes On’ EP explores a version of deep and broody house which has caught the ears and gained the support of The Revenge, Mark E, Neville Watson, Soul Clap, Spencer Parker, Hunee and Craig Richards. They’ve also pulled in a top drawer remix from JG Wilkes of Optimo under his Naum Gabo guise.

Review’s from Resident Advisor, xlr8r and Little White Earbuds can be found here and here and here respectively.

Subway Series No. 2

Next week sees the release of the second 12″ on Eamon’s Subway Series imprint, the label he uses to release the odd edit and revamp of tracks appearing occasionally in his DJ sets. This time Mister Harkin takes three numbers which should be somewhat recognizable to discerning ears and mutates them for the dance floor.

‘Party Out of Sight’ is a re-work of the Bill Wither’s seminal ‘Harlem’. This edit made its first mark a few years ago on mp3 blogs but has now been further spruced for wax. ‘The Better Kind’ stretches out Joy Division’s ‘Means to an End’ and underpins it with a propulsive drum pattern, while ‘Turn Up the Funk’ is a DJ-friendly re-work of the proto Hip-Hop number ‘Shoot the Pump’ from back in the day.

The other two tracks are after the break.
