Feeling Early Balearic Beat

The original Balearic sound as originally crafted and expressed by DJ Alfredo and taken forward by Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold and Trevor Fung has held quite a lot of musical interest for me lately.

The approach of having a healthy disregard for genre, whilst at the same time not compromising on the creation of a cohesive, layered, ever-building mood appropriate to the (sun drenched) surroundings, is part of an art form which only a handful of legendary jocks over the decades have pulled off. And Mister Alfredo was one of them.

Since that time Ibiza has gone on to construe a lot of good and bad about dance music and club culture. But it’s the early days when Alfredo was doing his thing, and Oakenfold and Rampling were importing the sounds back to the UK which I’ve been digging into a little further lately.

So I thought I’d share a couple of favorite jams which are associated with that time and which you may have heard weaved into a set or two over the summer at Mister Saturday Night.

Elkin & Nelson – “Jibaro”

Jean Luc Ponty – “In The Fast Lane”

If you want to explore more for yourself I’d recommend the Balearic Beats Vol. 1 compilation or Danny Rampling’s Break for Love compilation.

Loud Objects Sax It Up

Loud Objects is a trio of New York noisemakers that performs live by soldering sound-producing circuits together, crafting dissonant tones from microchips and wire. We just heard that the group is playing an intimate free show with the fearless Japanese saxophonist Tamio Shiraishi at Clocktower Gallery this Thursday evening – RSVP here, as space is very limited.

Here’s a taste of Shiraishi serenading the E train at one in the morning:

Other Nights of the Week: Denmark Levels Up

We’ve got the week off from party-throwing, so there’ll be a little extra time for going out. Aside from the must-see El Guincho and Ulrich Schnauss shows, we’ll be checking Babycastles’ video game geek-out happening at Queens’ favorite underground venue, Silent Barn.

Babycastles is a collective of gaming nerds who rescue underground and out-of-print video games from complete obscurity and install them in custom-built arcade cabinets all over town. They’re welcoming a crew of indie game designers from Copenhagen for this edition. Come for the Rückblende, stay for the akvavit.

Tue, Sept 28: El Guincho and Lemonade
Mercury Lounge (217 E Houston St, Manhattan) / 8p / $10 / more info / directions

Dreams Coming True Tonight

When I was 13, I listened mostly to the radio. Entering the eighth grade, I became friends with a group of kids whose older brothers were going to UNC Chapel Hill, a beacon of indie rock then and now. Because of the college town’s stalwart venue Cat’s Cradle and labels like Merge, kids leaving little towns in the south like mine could get exposed to high-quality music and in turn send it back home for the younger ears to feed on.

Pavement was the first thing to catch my ear in those roundabout dispatches, my main entry point to indie rock and non-commercial music in general. Their music was immediately accessible, full of hooks but with a spirit that wasn’t definable. I spent the next six years memorizing their absurd lyrics and trying, unsuccessfully to see them live, unbelievably bummed when I found out (as an intern at their home label, Matador Records, no less) that they were breaking up. I’d missed my chance to see my favorite band live.

But now, more than ten years later, I’ve got tickets in hand to go and see them with Eamon and our friend and MSN blog writer Eli Dvorkin tonight in Central Park, and from all reports they’re as good as they ever were back then. If you don’t have tickets, it’s beyond easy to get one even though they’re sold out. People were supposedly selling them outside the venue for half of face value, and they’re up on Craigslist for super cheap. And if you can’t go tonight, fear not! They’re playing tomorrow and Friday.
