Boys Will Be Boys

Resident Advisor and DJ History recently shone the spot light in different ways on the influential Boy’s Own fanzine from the late 80s. Penned by Andrew Weatherall (a personal hero), Terry Farley and others, the rough and ready publication played a pivotal role in the first wave of Acid House in the UK and the relationship with early balearic as it made it’s way to British shores. For more on the fanzine check out the aforementioned articles.

Junior Boy’s Own was the house music sub-label which was spun from the much less successful and short lived Boy’s Own label run by the same men behind the fanzine. JBO is a label with an amazing back catalogue of extremely musical and well (but not over) produced house cuts, and for quite some time now I’ve been collecting, enjoying and playing these records out. There’s always at least one JBO 12″ in my bag and I often have to ration how many I play in favor of diversity! Here is a few of those favorites. Hope you enjoy. Continue reading “Boys Will Be Boys”

Other Nights of the Week: CMJ Cheat Sheet

CMJ kicks off today, promising hundreds of bands, dozens of venues and countless industry flacks wielding their badges like swords to cut the line. Although we tend to think that paying $500 for a week’s worth of live music is pretty steep, we’re more than happy to crash the marathon’s best showcases – for an average of ten bucks a pop.

Here are our picks for each day of CMJ… and a couple of options for those seeking sweet relief from the madness. Continue reading “Other Nights of the Week: CMJ Cheat Sheet”

Bubbletease

There are never enough opportunities to hear new things from Maurice Fulton. The Sheffield-based, Baltimore-raised producer and DJ is one of the most prolific and talented around, but sadly, his creations see the light of day too infrequently.

Lucky for us, there’s Bubbletease Communications, his monthly podcast, which previews things that are yet to come: tracks from Tungi, the Mim Suleiman album he produced, were getting aired out about two years before it got released. And that’s a rarity. Most of what you hear on Bubbletease will never come out: Maurice is known to hold onto secret stompers without ever sending them to market.

We’ll deal, though. As long as they’re recorded on the thirty-minute Bubbletease mixes, we’ll be able to hear them in exactly the way we should.

Just Arrived

A big package of records just arrived at my door. It’s like Christmas! The James Blake track above – ‘I Only Know (What I Know Now)’ – was the first thing to go on the player. Heavenly. The I:Cube track below, ‘Merovingienne’, I’ve been dying for since I got the promo late last spring. Two (two!) got lost in the mail on the way over the Atlantic, so it’s a long-time coming. ‘In The City’ is a pretty little thing for the early evening by our friend Jacques Renault; and ‘Closer’ is, well, it’s filthy. And I love it. Continue reading “Just Arrived”

Pandaemonium: A Summoning in 5 Acts

Mister Saturday Night may be off this weekend, but two Mister collaborators are stepping into the weekend fray. Long-time comrade Rudolf Rocker and MSN projectionist Sam Burneverything are joining forces to present Pandaemonium, an evening of heavy sounds and visual illusions at Silent Barn.

Although the music may be of a different vein – think ’70s spy movies and psychedelic metal – the vibe should be familiar to the Mister crew. There’s plenty of room to make new friends, without sacrificing the raw intensity in front of the stage.

Come midnight, as the last ominous notes ring from Liturgy’s guitars, a group of shadowy magicians will conjure the Psychomanteum – a powerful oracle captured in a single shimmering mirror. Rumor has it that all those who remain will be allowed to gaze into its depths…

Dust off your finest wizarding hat, grab a minion or two and we’ll see you there.
