Hardcore History Day on WFMU

WFMU’s Diane Kamikaze celebrates Hardcore History Day (not a real holiday yet… but soon!) with a special edition of her radio show.

Her guests include Tony Rettman, author of Why Be Something You’re Not: Detroit Hardcore 1979-1985 and Meatmen singer Tesco Vee, alongside a slew of other punk-rock luminaries and fixtures from the Touch & Go zine

Herman Leonard Captured Jazz: 1923-2010

One of the great photographers of jazz, Herman Leonard, died last weekend. He was 87. Fred Kaplan offers up a lovely obit at Slate, describing Leonard’s seminal New York years and his late-in-life return from obscurity. Gleam-Glass-Gliss at The Stone

We may live for the bassline, but we can get down with some otherworldly abstraction. For anyone else in New York who shares that sentiment, here’s a heads up: Don’t miss Miguel Frasconi and Denman Moroney at The Stone tonight. 

These two gifted experimentalists will showcase their new collaborative album, Gleam, by creating strange sonic textures from shards of glass, ringing bells and the innards of a piano. The video above captures Frasconi coaxing beautiful sounds from what looks like an entire back bar. His parents must have had their hands full…
