The Duke

In the words of Bob Blumenthal of The Boston Globe “In the century since his birth, there has been no greater composer, American or otherwise, than Edward Kennedy Ellington”. Amen.

Record Fair and Kids Disco

Brooklyn Flea’s 4th annual Superstar DJ Record Fair will take place this Sat., Oct. 8, inside the Flea’s Smorgasburg food market on the Williamsburg waterfront. It will feature about 20 vintage record dealers, plus 20 vendors as part of the Independent Label Market, which launched in London in May and is making its US debut at the record fair. ILM features top labels from the world’s best music cities, with the heads of those labels manning the booths, selling their own products—new, catalog, rarities—at this unique and intimate new format for record-buying.

This year’s record fair will also include a kids’ disco party, with ourselves – Mister Saturday Night – taking care of musical duties. Then label owners and special guest artists will take spins on the open turntables for the remainder of the event.

Among the folks and labels selling are… 4AD, Captured Tracks, DFA, Domino, Fool’s Gold, Jagjaguwar, Kanine, Mexican Summer, Minimal Wave, Secretly Canadian, Throne of Blood, True Panther, XL, Young Turks, EAT Records, Halcyon, Us (yep, you can buy records straight from Justin and me), Neurotic Drum Band (our friends Ulysses  and John Selway), Piotr Orlov, Sound Fix, Doug Mosurock and John Allen.

Come by records from us, and bring your kids to get down.

‘Harkin & Raney’ To Date

The guys from Dog & Pony recently requested a mix from Harkin & Raney to form part of a recent edition of their ongoing podcast series. This seemed like a good opportunity to pull together all the production work, encompassing original tracks and remixes for Wurst Music Co, On The Prowl and of course Throne of Blood, to date by Steve Raney and myself. Here in isolation is that collection of tracks in mix format to download. It contains some unreleased and soon-to-be-released material.

Harkin & Raney for Dog & Pony

1. Harkin & Raney – Workin’ & Steamin’ (Throne of Blood)
2. Neurotic Drum Band – Robotic Hypnotic Adventure (Harkin & Raney Remix) (Wurst Music Co.)
3. Harkin & Raney – Happenstance (Unreleased)
4. OneAuff (aka Steve Raney) – Heavy Heady (Throne of Blood)
5. Corinne – Dream A Little Dream (Harkin & Raney Remix) (On The Prowl)
6. Harkin & Raney – Word To The Wise (Throne of Blood)
7. Eamon Harkin – Rigor Music (Throne of Blood)
8. Harkin & Raney – Shakes On (Throne of Blood)

One More Mister Sunday

We couldn’t help ourselves. It’s been too fun spending our Sundays outside not to do one more Mister Sunday before we close up shop for the season. In two weekends, on September 18 (the day after we welcome Pépé Bradock to Mister Saturday Night), very special guest and hometown hero, Levon Vincent joins the boys for an Indian Summer Mister Sunday.

Unfinished Business

It’s rained (or we were told it would rain) on every single Sunday in August this year. It’s actually been the wettest August in history in New York. Pretty bad luck for us all who’ve gotten used to Mister Sunday at Gowanus Grove as a highlight of the summer (although we still made the most of it).

Well, that’s all behind us now, and we intend to go out with a bang. Justin and I will take things home at the Grove next Sunday for the closing party, playing back-to-back from 3pm to 9pm. Surely it can only be a bright and sunny day… And then, once the sun sets, we’ll have an afterparty with Optimo, the gents who should have played with us on the weekend just past, before Miss Irene paid a visit. We’ll have details of the afterparty up on the site this week. For now, rest up, take it easy, and plan for a big day and special night from the Mister next Sunday.
